GEORGE C. WOLFE’S TONY-AWARD WINNING PLAY ‘THE COLORED MUSEUM’ COMES TO KITSAP COUNTY
January 19 and 20 at Central Kitsap High School Performing Arts Center
Silverdale, WA… The Tony-award-winning play with music The Colored Museum, a riveting theatrical work by American playwright and director George C. Wolfe that redefines our ideas of what it means to be Black in contemporary America, will be presented by Kitsap Black Student Union and Bainbridge Island Museum of Art in partnership with the Central Kitsap Performing Arts Center. The play will be performed on Friday, January 19 at 7pm and on Saturday, January 20 at 2pm and 7pm at Central Kitsap High School Performing Arts Center
The Colored Museum explores the contemporary Black experience in the United States in a way that is relevant, thought provoking and engaging, deftly using satire and humor to address serious social justice issues of our day. The play stars a cast of talented high school age students from Kitsap County and is being directed by noted theater professional Lynne Hastings. Organized as a series of museum exhibitions or vignettes, The Colored Museum explores the MLK inspired theme of Social Justice through the Arts, creating opportunities for meaningful dialogue regarding otherwise uncomfortable topics.
Playwright George Costello Wolfe is a notable contemporary American theatrical talent, with numerous credits and accolades as a director of both film and theater. He won a Tony Award for directing Angels in America: Millenium Approaches (1993), and another for his direction of Bring in ‘da Noise/Bring in ‘da Funk (1996). He served as Artistic Director of the Public Theater from 1993 to 2004. The Colored Museum received overwhelming critical praise for its provocative subject matter and in-depth exploration of the African-American theatrical and cultural past. The New York Times described Wolfe as “the kind of satirist, almost unheard of in today’s timid theater, who takes no prisoners,” and who “says the unthinkable, says it with uncompromising wit.” Whether you’re a theater lover or simply someone who appreciates art, social justice, or politics, “The Colored Museum” has something to offer.
Kitsap Black Student Union is guided by its mission to provide a safe space to celebrate culture, learn and preserve our rich history while empowering youth leadership through mentoring and community service. The vision of KBSU is to encourage local Black Indigenous People of Color (BIPOC) youth to take pride in our heritage and city while amplifying their voices through social justice initiatives. Bainbridge Island Museum of Art (BIMA) is a museum of contemporary art and craft of the Puget Sound Region, open 7 days a week, free of admission. Its year-round programs include supporting arts and cultural projects that engage students and youth of greater Kitsap County. BIMA is proud to partner on this project as part of its community celebration of Black History Month.

The Kitsap Black Student Union is proud to announce its upcoming Graduation Appreciation Night, a celebration of the hard work and achievements of graduating seniors from Bremerton High School, Central Kitsap High School, and Olympic High School.
As the school year comes to a close, it is important to recognize the dedication of these students not only to their education but also to their communities. This event will be a chance to honor and congratulate them for their accomplishments and wish them the best as they move forward into the next phase of their lives.
The Graduation Appreciation Night will feature speeches from local community leaders, as well as performances by talented artists from the Kitsap area. Attendees will also have the opportunity to connect with each other and build relationships that will last beyond graduation.
We encourage all graduating seniors, as well as their families and friends, to join us for this special event. It will be an evening of celebration, recognition, and appreciation for the hard work and dedication that has led these students to this momentous occasion.
